The Bachelor of Marine Biology focuses on how the marine environment works and how it can be better managed. It has a strong practical and field-based focus where students learn important concepts and skills. This course gives students a thorough understanding of life in marine and aquatic environments, acquisition of skills to study them and the ability to detect and assess detrimental effects on marine environments such as climate change, pollution, remediation and human resource use.
Students learn these skills and concepts through a combination of theory, field and laboratory experiences. Field trips undertaken in the later part of this course are particularly valued for the opportunities to practice the theory, knowledge and learn through experiencing the environment firsthand.
The Master of Marine Biology enables graduates to develop their knowledge and skills in quantitative marine ecology, conservation biology, and the biology, life history and taxonomy of tropical marine organisms. You will study tropical marine systems with emphasis on coral reefs and surrounding waters, seagrass, mangrove assemblages and the adjacent sandy and rocky shores. There is an emphasis on the whole organism biology, the ecology and biogeography of tropical marine organisms, and the evolutionary mechanisms that underlie their diversity.
Program flexibility provides preparation for further graduate study, secondary education career enhancement, or employment in technical research institutions, government agencies, or environmental consulting firms.
The education and training of doctoral students is one of the most important aspects of a university activity. The pursuit of knowledge through research higher degree programs not only leads to a well-educated society and a highly trained professional work force, but also contributes significantly to the university research and scholarship. The aim of the PhD program is to provide research training in a manner that fosters the development of independent research skills in candidates.
These skills include the capacity to formulate a significant problem, to develop mastery of appropriate conceptual and methodological skills, and to relate the research topic to a broader framework of knowledge in the relevant disciplinary area. The doctoral thesis provides evidence of a contribution to knowledge with a level of originality consistent with 3-4 years of full-time study and research training. It also demonstrates a candidate's capacity for critical analysis and that he or she is capable of pursuing scholarly and programmatic research.
